When should you wear a life jacket on a yacht?

Life jackets are an essential part of safety on every yacht, whether it is a motor yacht or a sailing yacht. The moments when you need to wear one depend on the weather, the location, your swimming ability and the judgement of the captain. On large crewed yachts, guests rarely wear life jackets continuously, but there are clear situations where they are important.

When life jackets are recommended or required

When using the tender:
This is the most common situation. Small transfer boats move quickly and react to waves, which is why life jackets are always recommended.

In rough weather:
Strong wind, higher waves or unstable footing increase risk, and the crew will advise when life jackets are needed.

When travelling offshore:
The further the yacht is from the coast, the more carefully safety is managed. Offshore passages often include clearer rules for wearing a jacket.

For guests who cannot swim:
Anyone who cannot swim wears a life jacket whenever they are outside the interior areas of the yacht.

For children:
Children wear life jackets whenever they are close to the water or using the tender. Child life jackets include a secure strap so they cannot slip out.

During certain manoeuvres:
When the yacht is docking, anchoring or handling lines, life jackets may be required for those assisting outside. Guests who are not helping normally stay safely inside the cockpit or salon.

When the captain decides it is necessary:
The captain may ask guests to wear a life jacket if visibility becomes poor, if wind increases or if the crew needs full attention during a manoeuvre.

What about night-time

On larger yachts, guests generally do not wear life jackets simply because it is dark. Safety at night relies on stable decks, good lighting, strong handrails and the presence of the crew. Life jackets at night are recommended only when conditions are challenging or when using the tender after sunset.

Types of life jackets

Automatic life jackets inflate when they come in contact with water and are comfortable to wear for longer periods. Foam life jackets provide instant buoyancy and are typically used for children and for guests who cannot swim.

Coastal waters and open sea:

Close to the coast, help can reach the yacht quickly. On open water, distances are much greater and weather can change rapidly. For this reason, safety rules are applied more strictly when the yacht is far from land.

The captain’s role:

The captain carries full responsibility for safety on board and always chooses the safer option when conditions change. During the safety briefing, the crew shows how life jackets work so guests feel confident using them when needed.

A practical way to think about it:

A life jacket plays the same role as a seat belt in a car. You hope you never need it, but if something unexpected happens, it can save a life. Wearing one is not a sign of worry. It is a sign of good seamanship and respect for the sea.

These prices generally include the yacht, crew, and standard onboard services, but exclude costs such as fuel, provisioning, and marina fees.

How much to charter a yacht in Europe?

In Europe, prices range from about €3,000 per week for smaller sailing yachts to well over €250,000 per week for luxury superyachts. The Mediterranean is the top choice, with peak prices in July and August due to high demand.

What is a charter on a yacht?
