What is a Gulet?

Gulet boats are frequently seen on the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. These yachts with traditional wooden sails are preferred for their looks and for the comfort they offer. It is especially common in Bodrum, Marmaris, Göcek and Antalya. These boats, which offer spaciousness and comfort in terms of cabins and living spaces, make it possible for you to have a comfortable holiday experience. They stand out as ideal boats especially for crowded families and groups of friends.

This expression, which is translated into Turkish as a gulet, comes from the Italian word Goleta. Later, it was transferred to French in a way to add the meaning of seagull. The reason why it is named this way is due to its appearance. Aegean and Mediterranean coasts were especially important for early civilizations in terms of habitat. Due to increased trade activities and wars, boat and boat building on these coasts has also been very important throughout history.

The tradition of boat and shipbuilding, unique to the region, includes the culture of many different civilizations and nations. Every civilization in the region, from the Carians to the Ottomans, gave importance to maritime and made additions to the boats to get ideal results at sea.

By the late 1800s, North American schooners had become popular around the world. Especially thanks to its useful structures, it has started to be seen frequently in the Mediterranean. Sailboat models, which were very useful and modern for their period, were adopted in a short time after they started to be seen in the Mediterranean. As a result, it was redesigned to conform to the boatbuilding traditions of the region. Designs made in this way were first expressed as Uskuna, and then it was named Gulet. At first, it was preferred for fishing, diving and food transportation.

In the 1930s, these boat types were very popular on the Mediterranean coast by the intellectuals of the period. Gulet types, which have an international reputation, have reached an important number in the region since the 1970s.


What are the Gulet types?

After the gulet types became popular, they started to be seen not only on the shores of Turkey but also in different countries with a coast to the Mediterranean. Today, gulets are built to be fully equipped with diesel engines and modern equipment. Traditionally, the gulet design is mostly wooden, but it easily offers all the facilities of a modern yacht and more. Gulets, as the ideal boat and yacht type for summer holidays, have been popularly used in the world since the 1970s.

The most common model among gulet models is the model expressed as watermelon stern. In general, the design of these models is oval in shape. The stern is rounded and flattened. Especially due to these structures, it manages to provide a comfortable experience even in bad weather conditions.

Models expressed as mirror stern have a flat design and angular aft stern design. It has a large internal volume compared to its dimensions. It can offer an ideal option for those who want to take a holiday on boat. With its spacious living areas and cabins, it helps you enjoy your vacation.
